What is Street Smart?

Our Philosophy

Street Smart means having situational awareness of the environment you're in.

You can encounter every distraction imaginable and as a human, it’s your responsibility to be ready to control and direct your dog's behavior in any situation.

About Our Program

The Street Smart Approach

We use Positive Reinforcement Training which uses verbal phrases along with touch.  Treats are only used as a method to position a dog in space initially until the command is learned. Dogs are always on leash (long and short) along with a training collar to give feedback to the pup if attention span is lacking.  E-collar training can also be brought into the equation if the owner likes the idea of giving their pup lots of space yet still having that (invisible) leash attached to the pup.

One on one training allows extreme focus with the owners and the dog.  It is critical that humans understand the nuances of timing, attenuation of the voice and visual hand signals.  Our program spans eight weeks in length, meeting once per week for our lesson.  A written summary is emailed the following day so you have reference to what was covered. The expectation is that, between lessons, 15 minutes per day is spent doing your homework with your pup.

On the first meeting we spend time developing the vocabulary of commands and hand signals to be taught.  Everyone has their favorite words for a desired response or action.

The entire program is designed to start simple and ramp up the distraction / temptation level until the final goal is reached.

Meet the Pack!

Lou Silverman- Pack Leader

Hello, Avid outdoor person who always finds a reason to be accompanied by his best friends.  Grew up with Welsh terriers who were always tagging along when we played outside.  Now generations of pups later the same continues with a variety of mixed breed rescues.  Developing my pack is something I have always enjoyed.  It’s my pack that allows our business to help all that pass our way.

Penny- Primary Pack Member

Penny was the catalyst to start the business.  Her demeanor was balanced and strong, exactly what I needed to be successful with training.  She shows what can be done with an obedient dog.  She also assists me as a distraction for the client so I can observe their progress.  Most importantly she is amazing in helping me with aggressive dogs, where only a canine trainer can break the uncontrolled dog's behavior.

Fifi- Secondary Pack Member

Fifi is heir to the throne as Penny only wants to work so much these days.  Fifi is coming online quickly and should be ready to handle any scenario in a short time.  She has drive and a willingness to assist me in her new role as assistant trainer
